Today is my birthday, so we are having a double celebration. Grab your favorite beverage as we delve into the inspiring stories of three immigrant mothers in Brooklyn on our latest White Label American podcast episode. Bertha, Murielle, and Preet share their unique challenges and triumphs in motherhood and how their immigrant journey has shaped their experiences. From building a community in a new environment to breaking cultural barriers and raising bi or multilingual children in multicultural America, our guests offer valuable insights on resilience and self-confidence in the era of social media controversies. We'd like to extend a special thank you to Bertha Jimenez Ph.D., Murielle Miszcak, and Preet Pannu for taking the time to share their stories, as well as our Patrons Nnenna and Sarah for their questions and support, and our dear friend Beatriz Nour of InBetweenish Podcast. [00:09:26] Growing up in a strict Indian household in Kenya with multigenerational households. They were taught to respect elders, be polite, and eat dinner at the table. Education was valued. They now struggle to enforce these values with their American children.
[00:27:30] An individual discusses their open-mindedness towards spirituality and their willingness to let their children choose their own path, regardless of religion, while also acknowledging traditions and the importance of a spiritual connection and community.
[00:40:02] A woman discusses her unique mother who overcame traditional gender roles and familial abuse, and how her family ultimately accepted her husband despite their differences. She also values the concept of a supportive maternal community.
[00:55:54] Supportive attitude towards pursuing non-illegal interests, but critical of certain music genres.
[00:58:24] Be mindful of the messages in hip hop, especially with regard to disrespecting women and the lack of representation for women and older adults.
[01:04:34] Prioritizing being a hands-on mother over her career but has recently returned to full-time work. She emphasizes the importance of finding what works best for each individual's path and identifying one's needs for self-care.
[01:19:34] Describing her anxious biracial child's need for a therapist who understands his identity.
[01:22:40] The practice of gratitude is important for everyone, even atheists. Remind yourself of what you are grateful for before bedtime to keep yourself from feeling alone and lonely, and realize that you have everything you need at every moment in your life.
[01:31:49] Stay resilient, have a strong sense of self and values to not get influenced easily. It's up to individual families and parents to solve such influences on teenagers who may not have a strong value system. It's crucial to explain and show the consequences of one's actions to prevent violence.
[01:43:46] Social media is orchestrated and mostly for entertainment, people should remind themselves not to take it too seriously or apply it to their own lives. Opinions on social media are mostly BS.

We also examine the importance of naming in different cultures and religions and the impact it has on personal identity.

On this episode of White Label American, I chat with entrepreneur and mentor, Kerry-Ann Reid, who runs the podcast production company, Breadfruit Media a podcast production company that creates culturally relevant content with a Caribbean American Point of View. We discuss how the podcast industry needs to prioritize the audience's needs over technology and advertisers. Kerry-Ann shares her personal journey, how she launched her own podcast, Carry On Friends, in 2015, and experienced burnout due to pressure to monetize. The discussion delves into creative burnout, feedback, and the importance of giving it in a safe and constructive way.

In honor of reaching 100 subscribers on YouTube, I'm releasing a special episode to reintroduce new listeners to myself! On December 17th, 2019, I was interviewed on White Label American and the episode was published on the 3rd of January 2020 - just a few months before the world changed so much. My friend Julienne Ryan (aka Jules) handled the interview and we're already working on Part II for my upcoming birthday in May. I'm also planning my first live stream of the year - stay tuned for more details!

On this episode of White Label American, Raphael opens up about his podcasting journey, recounting his experiences growing up in Nigeria and his struggles with insecurity. Listeners will learn how Raphael's encounters with different cultures and attitudes towards LGBTQ+ and Middle Eastern communities impacted his view of the world and his role in the military. He also shares the importance of accountability and the pushback he has received for prioritizing that over tribal loyalty. Through his in-depth conversations with guests, Raphael encourages listeners to be open-minded and account for different perspectives. Join Raphael on his journey to discover new cultures and stories, and be inspired to challenge your own views and beliefs.

Today, I'm delighted to have not one, not two, but THREE amazing European guests in the studio for this week's episode. Julia Arens and Nadine Von Ahsen from Germany, and Murielle Misczak from Switzerland all with Kinderhaus Brooklyn joined us to discuss their unique perspectives on cults and children's education. It was a wonderfully enlightening experience to hear how their different upbringings shaped their views. Nadine shared her experience of how her name was popular in Germany during the 80s and 90s and that Germans don't typically have middle names. Julia clarified that she and the previous guest Zou Diallo were not actually married, whoops sorry Julia and Zou!
We had a great time bouncing from Switzerland to Germany to Troy Illinois and Brooklyn NY. It was heartwarming to hear these three women from different countries and backgrounds share their common interests in children's education and the methods used at Kinderhaus.
It would be so great to have them back for another episode to talk more about their individual approaches to nurturing children and their unique methods of education. And of course, we must take time to celebrate the victory of a German recognizing Mambo No 5 as their own!

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, I sat down with Yuan Wang for an inspiring conversation. Yuan is a product designer in the tech industry, using design to make a positive impact on people's lives and our environment. She's worked in music publishing and now focuses on controlled environmental agriculture.
We discussed her hometown Chengdu, fireworks, digital spaces, and how people have become unhinged. It's been an absolute pleasure to end the Black History Month episodes with Marcus Haynes, a distinguished guest whose journey began in Brooklyn before he was exposed to the rich and diverse cultures of Lusaka, Zambia, Kisumu, Kenya, and Johannesburg, South Africa. His parents are from the Caribbean, making his life story even more unique.
What makes Marcus an even more exceptional person is that he had the incredible opportunity to meet Nelson Mandela as a teenager. How many of us can say the same thing? Although Marcus may not have fully appreciated the moment then, it is something he remembers vividly today.
Today, Marcus is the President and Founder of RH1 Consulting LLC, a Human Resources consulting firm. Although he hadn't initially thought of entering the field, he was eventually encouraged to do so by his dad while in college studying biology to become a veterinarian.
It's been a real treat to celebrate Marcus' amazing story with you all. I have to bring Marcus back to talk parenting, love, and more volleyball (yes, he was a professional volleyball player)!
Get in touch with Marcus at https://www.rh1consulting.com/

I'd like to take this moment to apologize for wrongly stating earlier that Christian Atsu, was among the survivors pulled out earlier in the earthquake in Turkiye during recording. Unfortunately, by the time of publishing, Atsu had not been found (he has been found and buried back home in Ghana). My thoughts are with his family, fans, and Ghanaians along with Turkish, and Syrians during this difficult time.
Rodney Jehu-Appiah had just returned from a family trip to his homeland of Ghana when this episode was recorded. It was the first time he had brought his children to the country, and it was a truly special experience. Not only did they have lots of fun, but Rodney felt a newfound connection to his creative side that he had neglected for some time.
In this episode, Rodney shares his journey of embracing creativity and how he’s accepted that it’s his duty to share his art with the world. I hope you find Rodney's story inspiring and that it sparks your own creativity. to share your art with the world. to share your art with the world.
